Is There a Way to Fix an Optical Joystick? (Rollie Flash1)

I was debating whether to leave this in the Rollie thread, but I figured if I could fix it with a transistor or something, I'd do that.

X-Post from Rollie thread:

"Is my Flash1 dying already? I pre-ordered the first batch of the (then) returning Flash1 a while back (Oct 2012 actually) from FA, and it's been flaky as shit these days. Randomly, the entire joystick will just stop working in both a PC and a PS3. The thing I've traced it to is the Flash1. I've had it attached to a dualmod Madcatz VS with TE Kitty, a standalone PS360+, and a standalone MC Cthulhu. ALL options have the same thing happen. The same "random" (anywhere from 5mins to 30min+ sessions) drop out has occurred in multiple PCs and consoles. I understand that there's a half-life to the LEDs in the PCB, but all directions work fine during use, but 3 years?"

It's been happening for months (or even at least a year), but I usually chalked it up to my USB front "extension" ports on my PC case, as sometimes they're a little finicky. But when I used the same joystick in a PS3 and X360 and the drop-out occurred, I knew something else was up. I narrowed it down to the Flash1, beyond a shadow of a doubt. Joysticks work fine and zero drop-outs with plain old JLF microswitches.

What can I do to troubleshoot this? Where might I be able to solder a transistor to/from to fix this? If it's hosed, I guess I can be happy that I got a solid year of silence for the $60 pre-order.
