SANWA JLF-TRG-8YTH.SK vs Paradise Arcade silent omron kit (actuator/diagonal question)

$

So first off I am not putting down PAS. I love them. I just got a silent kit and put it on my JLF and I can't hit the diaganols for shit. I literally ride the gate and hit them 1/10th of the time. I know they use the exact same switches and an identical harness. And I know that they both use a .5 MM over sized actuator. My question is: Is paradise arcade's .55 over sized aluminum actuator a different shape then the white plastic one Sanwa sends out with their SANWA JLF-TRG-8YTH.SK ?

That's the only thing I can think that is different.

Also does anyone that owns a SANWA JLF-TRG-8YTH.SK have a hard time with diags compared to the stock jlf? I know the actuator is a little bigger and i know the OMRON D2RVG engage point is a lot deeper in than the stock JLF switches (hence the bigger actuator) but i cant imagine diagonals being that hard to hit.

Please, anyone with info on this let me know. I will also pass it along to PAS.

Thank you very much!!!

Seth

(I would just buy a SANWA JLF-TRG-8YTH.SK to test but I feel like I would be paying $75 for a 90c actuator)

(ps I know there was a similar topic on this matter but I believe it was having to do with hitting diagonals on zippy vs cherry

[Help]MADCATZ SF4 TOURNAMENT EDTION ROUND 2 XBOX 360 ARCADE STICK PROBLEM

My joystick won't register inputs, but the buttons do. I used to be able to unplug and reboot but now my PC hangs on boot screens if shit is plugged into the usb so I can't plug it before I boot and then it's the same problem if I plug in after. What can I do?

Put Felt on Bottom Panel of Your Stick

I just did this to my stick today and wrote up an article about it. My site is pretty hokey, but I'm not a web designer so go easy on the criticisms please. I hope you enjoy.
One of my favorite functional things about the EightArc arcade sticks is the felt bottom they use to prevent the stick from sliding around. I like it so much that last night, after I got done swapping parts between a HRAP3 and Amazon.co.jp HRAP2 and testing it, I realized I was not able to consistently perform inputs the way I could on the EightArc. This made me pay attention closely to my own inputs, and I realized the stick would slide just slightly, and the new angle threw me off enough to make a difference. After this realization I did a search and found that Michaels has adhesive-backed felt sheets, and it seemed that my problem would be solved (well, one of my problems. If I weren’t so bad at video games at my old age, I wouldn’t need to go through this effort). So off I went to Michaels. To play video games better. I know. It doesn’t sound right.

Qanba Q2 Joystick issues?

$

Hello there, I'm fairly new so go easy...

I'm inquiring about the Qanba Q2 joystick which works for the PS3 and PC, it's an awesome arcade styled joystick and I've been enjoying using it on the PS3 and it even works on my PC, like it states.

However, I have a backwards compatible PS3 and when I try to play PS2 games, every game asks me to plug in the controller. I press the "home" button which is essentially the "PS" button on a regular controller but no response. I'm actually wondering since there doesn't seem to be any notion of it anywhere, does the Qanba simply not work on PS2 titles even if you have a backwards compatible PS3?

If that's the case, then I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what a good PS2 controller would be on a PS3/PS2 compatible machine. I've actually looked it up but found very little. The best one I've been able to find is a Universal Arcade Fighting Stick that seems to work for PS2/PS3/PC... which is fine, but I'm not sure it's the same quality. As long as it works fine, I'm alright with it. It's just a shame.

Frankly, I'd like to avoid customizing, and I'd like to avoid spending even more money than I have for the Qanba.

There is a Virtual Arcade Stick that seems to work for PS2, PSX and Saturn's, which would be great to have honestly, but I'm trying to avoid using my PS2 because the PS3 seems to work fine with most of my games anyway.

Any advice would be appreciated, I'm not really much of a core gamer, but I wanted some insight if the Qanba Q2 just doesn't work with PS2 games on a PS3 even if it's backwards compatible. Thanks

How to: Hand Paint Your Balltops

$
0
0
NOTE: This is the way I paint custom balltops for my friends and myself. There is probably a better system out there.

What you need:
- A balltop. I normally use a plain white ball.
- Pencils. One for drawing and one you don't care about ruining.
- A felt tip marker. I have one of the fancy artist one but a normal Sharpie will work fine.
- Paints and brushed. I use model car/trains/RC car paints in an asortment of colors and types(acrylic, emamel).
- 600 grit and 2000 or higher wet/dry sandpaper.
- Valspar Clear Glosse Interior/Exterior. I find this brand the most consistant and it leaves a true clear coat with no yellow hue.

Optional (but makes your life I ton easier):
- A bolt that will screw into your balltop. I was lucky enough to stumble upon one out in the shop. If I knew that actual size I would gladly post it. (Updated 6/29) Want I have is a 10mm finethread bolt into a 3/8 hexheaded socket drive that I lock into a cordless drill. Obviously a 10mm won't fit into a 3/8 drive, so I ground down the head some so it will fit. The best way I would suggest to go about making one is go to your local hardwarestore with a balltop and start screwing in bolts 'til you find one that fits. Grab it and go find a drive that'll fit it. #rednecktech
- A cordless drill and an adaptor that will fit your bolt.
- Rubbing Compound for final polishing. I use 3M's Rubbing Compound. It's semi cheap, it's easy to find at any autoparts store and it small enough to store with my other art supplies.
- An old rag or towel you don't mind getting dirty.

IMG_0172.JPG

First, using the 600 grit sandpaper rough the entire surface of the ball. This is to give your paints and markings somehting to grip to. After that using an old pencil screw it into the ball. This gives you a nice handle to use while painting.

IMG_0175.JPG

Now using the pencil scribble out what you want your ball to be. I'm making a Honda top.

IMG_0178.JPG

When you like what you got you can try to clean up your ball some with sandpaper(I wouldn't try an easier because it tends to just smeer and makes it look dirty) or go straight into inking your lines. If you don't want to have any dark black lines on you ball then skip to the next step.

IMG_0181.JPG

Lines done. Time to paint. Try to keep you coats as thin as possible and keep in mind that paints don't always work well together. Make sure to give cost enough time to dry before applying another.

IMG_0183.JPG

Painting done? Stop and let dry for AT LEAST 24-42 HOURS. Now is when I would go back in and do a little touch ups with the marker. I like having clean dark lines.

Clear coating. The very first coat of clear should be very light. Think of it as locking everything in place. Follow the directions on the can and apply 3-4 heavier coats. After you apply the last coat let it dry for another 24-48 hours.

IMG_0189.JPG

Remove the ball from the pencil and screw it onto the bolt and powerdrill combo. Using the 2000(or higher)grit wet/dry sandpaper and some water sand the ball down some. You just want to remove the pumps and get it as smooth as you can. DO NOT SAND TOO MUCH. You will begin to eat into the base colors and this will be annoying to fix. When you have it semi smooth(it wont be completely smooth and thats fine) spray 3-4 more coats of clear. Keep doing this until after sanding the ball is completely smooth.

IMG_0192.JPG

When it's nice and smooth you're done. It's has a dull finish and within a week or two of normal use it will naturally polish over.

NOTE: THE PAINT STILL NEEDS TO HARDEN. With normal use you should be fine. But if your grip is really strong or you tend to store your stick in a bag I would let the ball set and harden for at least a week. A month would be better.

IMG_0196.JPG

If you don't want to wait or just want a very shinny ball using the drill and an old rag apply some rubbing compound. If you really want it to "pop" wax it with some car wax.

IMG_0201.JPG

My sugarskull top has lasted little over a year now and still looks the same as it always has.

EXAMPLES(not all completed):
samples.png

The same process with a little modding can be done to paint buttons as well. I'm not sure on how long they'll hold up but as I said before my sugarskull top is still holding up well.

QanbaQ4 not working on PS3 anymore, only PC(and maybe xbox)?

$

So I had my QanbaQ4 connected at the same time that my xbox-for-windows controller was connected, and I restarted my computer and did a windows update. All of a sudden my Q4 started only reading as "Xbox 360 controller for Windows" and when I tried to connect it to my PS3, it says "An unknown device has been connected." even though the console switch is still on PS3/PC and it won't work. I've tried uninstalling and disabling the driver, restarting my PC and PS3, and connecting a PS3 controller at the same time as the Q4, but nothing works. Has anyone have the slightest clue what is wrong, or if there is a fix or not?

Edit:Also I had just switched out the buttons today on the stick before this all happened

This thread is for discussing the technical aspects of modding SF4AE. It is not for submitting skins. Do that in this other thread, instead.

If you're just getting into modding, hit up the tutorials on the modding wiki. Most everything still functions similarly to vanilla SF4, but the engine doesn't use emz bundles for costumes/colors anymore.

I will update this first post with some frequently asked questions as they arise, so please read it before asking.

I figured we need a place for everyone to post their Arcade Cabinets. Custom Built, MAME Machines, Cocktails, Straight from the arcade, Whatever!!!

I've seen some really nice cab's here, but it's hard to find them all.

I'll start.

101_0996-1.jpg

This is my Dynamo 20" Street Fighter 2 Cab. Currently houses a PS2 with hacked DS1 pads under the CP.

101_0985.jpg

Up next is my Current WIP. It's a vewlix style cab using T5's as a CP. This should be done in a few weeks.

101_0874.jpg

Last is my MAME setup. Usually going for high scores in Donkey Kong. Had to build the CP from scratch. Pretty Stoked about how it came out.

Alright all, let's see some Cabs!!!

Darkmatter Xbox Laptop & DIY Kit

Hi guys. Newbie forum user techjango here. We're a start-up based in Austin, Texas focusing on OSHW & DIY products and services. We recently launched a kickstarter campaign to fund our Darkmatter project and thought that the users at this forum might be interested.

Darkmatter is an Xbox 360 (*) Laptop Kit that you can use to convert your Xbox 360 into a portable gaming system replete with HD widescreen display, capacitive touch controls, USB ports and more. The project initially started simply as an effort to make a portable Xbox 360 system for ourselves, inspired by famed electronics hacker Ben Heck - he's made one-off mods in the past, and continues to do special orders at around $5000. We were pretty happy once we completed our own personal little mod, it was a fun learning experience (there were some frustrating points in the path, but all in all it was a good experience). Racking up the costs, they turned out to be much less than $5000, and we thought, “Why not make more of these, for other people?”. It's much cheaper to make, you learn a lot about soldering and electronics and such through the process, it allows you to play games in a small private setting and it's great for LAN parties. And so we named our little boy 'Darkmatter' and decided to crowd-fund it with kickstarter. Here it is:
photo-main.jpg

We're still short of our funding goal, and would love to bring this product into the gaming and DIY/hacker community's hands. If you find this project interesting, please do help fund this on our kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/1360501894/darkmatter-xbox-laptop-and-diy-kit. We have reward levels all the way from $10 pledges (name-listing on website and a vote on color options) to $999 (fully assembled and tested Darkmatter Xbox Laptop, a how-to eBook and a skill badge)

We demo'ed Darkmatter recently at the Bay Area Maker Faire and got a very positive response. Ben Heck himself stopped by!
image-262030-full.jpg

We do hope our cause (and Ben Heck's approval!) will convince you to support us. We've already been covered in prominent tech websites such as mashable and engadget but are still short of our funding goal. Help us bring this to you! Share around and pledge! We'll be releasing all our design files once the kickstarter is funded, so you can go make your very own mod!

We'd love to hear your questions, comments and feedback. Feel free to leave them right here on this thread, or check out our kickstarter for common queries and updates on the project. Thanks for reading!

----
* more than just the Xbox 360. In light of the upcoming Xbox One release, we've announced support for it as well. It's essentially an Open Laptop platform that we're building, after all. Regardless, the Darkmatter would be a cool way to salvage your old '360 once the One comes out!
