The "what stick/controller should I get" Guide.

Warning: This thread is heavily opinionated as are the nature of any product review. Movie and game reviews are heavily opinionated as well.
As well all have contrasting views on what is good/acceptable, as rule from the moderators, we shall not devolve into a VERSUS thread.
Personal opinions are fine, trying to argue that your favorite stick is better will not be tolerated. Do not confuse opinion with fact and vise versa.
Your Results/Mileage will vary. And don't ask for us to make a choice for you, I am not holding anyone's hand.

When it comes to my own reviews, I will not go through and point out what is my own opinions from what is fact (as my prerogative), and I encourage everyone to do your own fact finding research before you make a final conclusion for yourself. That is what google is for, finding your own research and making your own decisions.

Stop asking for Promo codes and sales for any Mad Catz or other products.
Mad Catz has a front page ad on SRK's homepage. If there any codes to be had it be ether there or a insider like MarkMan will share with us the good news via a post in Tech Talk.
You will find out when everyone else dose.

I will come back and edit and update this thread as needed so if you spot something wrong, let me know. And you other experts on Tech Talk, feel free to add your own wisdom and insight.
Yeah I am not having that any more, because I am a jerk.

Keep in mind I am purposely leaving out many limited edition and/or collectors sticks, as it goes outside the intentions of the guide. Collectors are going to collect.

ATTENTION ALL READERS
And I also like to keep custom sticks off the thread entirely, Custom sticks are outside of the scope of this guide and is considered off topic. If you want a custom stick go to the
Need a Modder in Your Area? or you can try the Trading Post.

If you have questions for a mod try the search function here at SRK or

Please do not post build questions here.

If you ever want to search SRK google : site:shoryuken.com and then beside it put what your looking for bookmark it It makes searching SRK and so much easier and efficient

SRK vets should really advertise this more maybe it would cut down on some of the repetitive question...nah it wouldn't because people are too lazy to search for answers

At no time I will rate Sanwa or Seimitsu with each other or IL and Happs, or Japanese vs US/European vs Korean style parts.

Before I start with the cool part of this guide, we will first cover three more important objectives.
And what you need to consider above all else.
  • Needs
  • Wants
  • Budget
Needs. This covers what you absolutely have to have, strip down and basic. With any purchase this is what you should think of first. When it comes to Video Game controls this is usually covered by the Default game pad, only a few games require specialized controls or controls modified for those who have special needs. Example a One handed controller for a gamer who only have one useable arm.
I am assuming most people reading this guide now are hardcore fighter or arcade game fans who the regular d-pad is not cutting it for you, as we all hear complaints over the Xbox 360 or PS3 D-pad.

Wants. This is what you have your heart set for. For most people this is your end results.

Budget. This is how much money you have to spend. Budget is the more realistic and sobering part of the purchase process. Typically a stick will run you 60 to 250 dollars U.S. retail this figure will change with what the normal market price is in your region of the world.
Any stick you find less than $50 is not worth your money and breaks easy. Sticks more than $200 are no longer considered Beginner Sticks.
My general rule of thumb on these things: when in doubt, pass. I'd rather pay the few extra dollars and get one that I KNOW works than one that may or may not. My peace of mind is worth a few extra dollars

If you find some cheap stick or pad somewhere from questionable sources, consider it highly risky and pass. Usually what is too good to be true usually is.

Keep in mind if you are broke (Budget), and the default game pad works fine enough for you (Need) that these 2 will and should over ride your Wants.

Now I am also going to cover other features of each stick/ controller here. These factors are also important to cover but goes secondary to the above. I be using this on almost every stick I list here.
  • Quality
  • Reliability
  • Ease of Modification
  • Purpose or special use
Quick Short Cuts
Mad Catz
Hori
Sega
American/ European Style , Korean Style, Qanba and others

Unless otherwise noted, each sticks are for the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

Read about PlayStation 4 sticks here

Difficulty Scale for Modding
From a scale of 1 to 5. This will factor in installing Buttons, Joysticks and replacement panels, and to a lesser extend PCB replacement.
This will not factor actual Dual-mods, replacement art or any painting.
  1. Easy: Standard parts drops right into place, reasonable access to all parts.
  2. Medium Easy: Still uses standard parts, access can be difficult/ time consuming
  3. Moderate Difficulty: Requires minor case modding or appropriate mount plates
  4. Medium hard: Requires some physical tool use to fit parts into place.
  5. Hard: Requires Heavy modding using tools to cut, grind or drill to fit replacement parts.
Last but not least I ask readers to go outside of this thread and do your research. Read reviews here on SRK and reviews on online stores and in magazines. Weigh the Pros and Cons before deciding which stick to get. And stop posting new threads on what stick you should buy, its why this thread is sticked.

How to Win at eBay.
Keep in mind eBay is not an online store. eBay is a listing and auction service, you are buying from that individual seller not eBay. And Every Seller is different.
For Experienced sellers who sold hundreds if not thousands, Look for sellers with a Feedback score of 99.5% rating or better. Huge time sellers with a 95% or lower are to be avoided like the plague. Pay attention to the text in the negative feedbacks, check to see if the negative feedbacks buyers actually have an issue or they are just jerks.
For people with a hundred sales or less, if they do not have a 100% rating, avoid them.

*When Bidding
Never, ever bid early. You only drive the price up higher.
Wait till the last possible minute, sometimes the last possible twelve seconds.
Also decide in advance the maximum you want to bid.

*How to know if you have a good price or not
Swing over to the reviews on PAGE 1 (it is required for this thread). I did not list the current price of a stick, I listed there original MSRP (or close to it). With the exception for huge collectors’ items avoid sticks that price them higher than I have them listed. (Examples Comic Con TE, Chun Li TE is going to be priced higher than other TEs) Many sellers have a terrible habit of over inflating the price of their sticks thinking the Market will bear, do not fall for it.
Also beware for sticks that are market high and are not in NEW/ Close to NEW condition. DO NOT pay full price on "customized sticks" with a few exceptions. Otherwise only pay full price on sticks that are keep stock.

Those exceptions are:
* Sticks that do not come as Full Sanwa or Full Seimitsu (they used knock off Parts instead of authentic parts) are modded to be all authentic buttons and joystick. Example finding a Mad Catz WWE Brawl Stick that has a JLF and Sanwa buttons installed. You should not pay any more than (approx) 10% more than the cost of the stick + cost of the new parts.
* Sticks that has been professionally Dual-Moded (if in doubt ask someone in SRK TT) The pricing should be cost of the stick + Dual Mod PCB Cost + 10% to 25% of the stick for labor.
* Older era (Decades old sticks such as SNES and Genesis/MegaDrive Era and back) sticks that are refurbish. Many of these are collector items.

As for buying online outside the United States? This is a tricky issue as each countries fighting game scene is different.
The market strong in Parts of Asia (like Japan or S. Korea), Europe (mostly Western Europe), Australia and Canada (maybe Mexico) otherwise you have to eat heavily shipping costs.
Tip for you guys overseas is try to find a seller in your home country first if possible, better if he is in your home province/area.
If that not possible look at neighboring Countries that are friendly to your own. Example You are living in Span, try a French, British or German Seller if you can't find someone in Spain (yes I know they are not right next to each other).

Here is another VERY GOOD guide for buying on eBay
It is on a website for cameras and photography but everything on that guide applies to arcade sticks as well. Just that all their examples are photography related.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/ebay/
P.S. Ken Rockwell is also having great advice and tips on photography.

Also there is no such thing as a "BEGINNER STICK" so do not ask. There are no Training Wheels in the FGC.

Also there is the thread FrankCastleAZ started, I am defaulting anything said to his thread.

Venom arcade stick PS4/PS3

Hi guys!
do you have heard anything about the Venom PS4 arcade stick? I take a look at the description and photos(since it´s the only thing we got) and it looks like the mayflash V2, the case looks the same used on the mayflash v2.
Since the descrition says it has premium quality parts (I dont know what they call premium quality parts) I assume it comes with sanwa or seimitsu parts. The color of the buttons and balltop looks navy, so maybe it has the PS-15 navy(I dont believe but it´s the only quality buttons I know with that color). The price is 75€($86), a nice chance to get a PS4 stick. It looks nice btw, here is some photos:

I was looking on the net and I found other PS4 stick with the same name but different in all aspects, looks a kind of cheap one, here is it:

Anyone ever opened up a Hori Ehrgeiz Stick?

I've got one of these little beauties coming in the mail from overseas right now and I'd like to upgrade it with a Sanwa JLF joystick and some Seimitsu PS-14-KN buttons when it arrives, but I've had absolutely zero luck finding any pictures of what the stick looks like on the inside so I'm not sure what all supplies I'll need to do the upgrade. I have done the same JLF + Seimitsu buttons upgrade to a Hori T5 stick before, so I'm definitely prepared to drill out the restrictor plate and desolder the original buttons from the PCB then wire it up if that's what will be necessary, I'm just hoping that someone might be able to post a picture or two of the inside of one of these Ehrgeiz Sticks so I'll know whether it can be upgraded the same way as a Hori T5 or if a different procedure will be required.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Can you make a Crown 303-FK silent?

Im a family these days so being able to play without waking up the house is pretty key for me. I have been getting more and more curious to try the Crown 303-FK but was wondering if I could change the microswitches to the Omron D2RV-G switches instead since I believe those are the silent ones. Any Idea if I can just add levers to the switches? If anyone has some knowledge please help me out :).

I won't make too many assumptions, but it looks like a budget stick. (EDIT- It is)
I believe we need more budget sticks on the market to get more new fighting game players familiar with using arcade sticks at a reasonable cost.

The base looks a bit thin by the photo, so I'm unsure if a JLF shaft would clear that. (EDIT- Likely will be high enough to swap joysticks, mentioned mod friendly by MarkMan on Twitter)

May not be Sanwa parts to keep costs low.

It's cooler (6 button) instead of dick (8 button) which is BADASS (This sentence is an SRK Tech Talk inside joke. Don't take it personally)

Feedback on Hori Hayabusa dead zone?

$

Hello all,

So i have been practicing Potemkin's 6k loop (GG xrd rev) probably the most hardest and technical combo in the game even harder then some of Ino's combos. But after long time practicing with my Sanwa JLF-TPRG-8AYT-SK Silent + Kowal 1mm actuator i can do it love the stick btw feels fast, smooth and silent. However i tried different sticks:

Regular Sanwa JLF + kowal = not very good diagonals have issues compared to the Sanwa silent and overall not as snappy as the silent version oddly enough
Seimitsu LS-40-01 this one is GREAT i could do the 6k loop relatively easy even if i had no adjustment time to the stick overall superb stick
Seimitsu LS-32-01 after some adjusting i could manage 6k loop maybe getting used to it more will solve it...

However the Hori Hayabusa which i modded by sanding down the 1mm Kowal actuator at its edges did shorten the trow but damn i have some major difficulty doing the 6k loop (6k loop needs extreme reaction and speed 2 or 3 frames leniency it involves charging which must be done very fast before the prior move comes out)

So is this due to the sticks "dead zone" or "Throw" or "Engage"? No matter how fast i input the stick simply does not cooperate once i switch to LS-40-01 and Sanwa JLF silent i could do my 6k loop. Its a shame i do like the feel of the hayabusa since every other combo comes out smooth. Your thoughts on dead zone, throw, engage on the Hayabusa and why i am having issues? Maybe the Hayabusa is great for none extreme timing combos but for the 6k loop its very dissapointing.

Thx in advance

Brook Sniper: Giving the FGC (& FPSC) Options

Brook-Sniper-FPS-Controller-Converter-Adapter-Mouse-and-Keyboard-Precision-Converter-for-PS4-PS3-Xbox-One.jpg

Brook released the sniper and one of the ancillary features is the usb port on the back. It basically acts as a plug and play UFB. I've tried every unboxed stick & pad I own from various consoles at it and so far it works on the PS4 and is hot swappable. Also there is a 3.5mm input for audio\voice on PS4, an easier way to use your 3.5mm headsets with sticks and pads lacking this option and for folks not using USB\BT headsets.
image026.jpg

•End goal is to provide a comprehensive list of everything you need to know about this converter and with it's unique properties I believed it was owed its own thread. As I have more time (If you own the Brook Sniper as well feel free to post your own discoveries or tests and I'll update this OP) with the sniper I plan to test & upload video(s) on the following;

Input Lag
  • Will use the 60fps recorded video method on USFIV & then SFV per pad/stick.
  • Will test input lag with eTokki PSXto360 & Brook PS2toPS4 adapter.
  • Will compare inpit lag with a native PS4 stick plugged in directly to the PS4 and the same PS4 stick plugged into the Brook Sniper as a pass through.

Compatibility With Other Consoles
  • 360, XB1, PS3, PC & MAC

Disassembly & The Guts of This Device
  • Mini UFB inside?
  • Modular?
  • Can it be scaled down and used specifically for the converter and 3.5mm headset properties?

Valuable Use
  • I can see the Sniper being used at your local eSport Centers or even zealous TOs. Mount two of these adapters to each PS4/Console and advertise the ability for customers/contestants to bring the Stick/Pad of their choice from any console. Large investment but only need to bring multiple adapters, and caters to FPS crowd as well.
  • Players with multiple adapters can consolidate into this one adapter albeit a larger form factor, unless we find we can scale down the adapter's pcbs.
  • Brook future support for Tournament Mode, I've tested some Macros for Keyboard\Mouse on a FPS but haven't tried creating a Macro for SFV.
  • The micro USB has a USB that has another USB piggy backed onto it. Only 1 of the USB's need to be plugged into the console, the other USB is only needed if your KB&M draw enough current to require it or the Gamepad\Arcade Stick port draws enough current to require it. Only plugging in the primary USB frees up a only other USB port available on the original PS4s. A powered USB hub can be used here as needed as well.
  • I can use my mechanical keyboard as a hit box! Kind of, worked fine for shotos but I could not register a 360 motion in SFV? Will try USFIV and other fighters\consoles.
  • Pad\Stick and KB&M all remain under 1 PSN profile
  • Hotswapping a Pad\Stick when a KB&M is plugged in doesn't trigger a new PSN profile login (saves a few seconds of next user to just sit down and play instead of picking a PSN profile)
  • Hotswapping a Pad Stick without KB&M plugged in untested
  • 3.5mm Audio plugin support for PS4, untested for other consoles but brooks advertises it only works for PS4

    I'very started a video series for Brook for providing this review unit from a FPS perspective;
The playlist will stay the same but will automatically have more videos on the playlist as the videos reach their scheduled date and time for public viewing.
    • Unboxing Video @ 3/3/17
    • Initial Impression for FPS/OW @ 3/4/17
    • 5 Weekly Videos @ 3/5/17 and every Sunday for 5 wk.'s, follows a Master Rank Overwatch player go from DS4 to a Corsair Strafe KB & a Razer Imperator
    • Final Impression for use on FPS/OW: Available after 5th week
    • Comparison to Xim4 @ TBD
    • Hotswapping Sticks and pads demonstration on PS4 @ TBD
    • Various Input Lag test @ TBD

**I Will update the first post with the new info as it's created and post the new edits in the reply posts.
**If you own a Brook Sniper or have access to one anything you test or discover update the rest of us and I'll add it to this OP.

img0916i.png
Currently I've noticed a lot of threads opened up for worklogs and basic building advice, so I wanted to create a thread geared specifically towards woodworking (lets mash em' together). If you are a first time builder looking for a little help or a veteran builder who wants to exchange ideas about your next projects, go over different techniques (hell even your best accidents) here's the place. If you would like to post pics of your work in production for assistance or to show off your workshop.

If asking questions please list your current tools/paint/finishing supplies as there may be someone out there with a few tips or tricks specific to the brand you're using ;)
My current setup:
Dewalt table saw
Custom Router Table
Craftsman Router
Porter Cable Router
Ryobi router 1/4" collet w/table

Hey so I wanted to buy Hori RAP4 Kai for PS4 but I saw that there are different models out there but Im not sure what are the differences and which one is better? What I saw is one model has PS Button in the middle and another one has it as the last button. Also there are different product numbers PS4-015U or PS4-015E. Xbone Padhack Triggers

Wasn't really getting anywhere in the other thread so I figured start my own and see if anyone can help haha.

I recently tried to padhack a first party xbone controller, most of it is working, except for the triggers.
Feel like they're hooked up properly as I've followed the most common setup (i.e. 100ohm resistor in the positive line coming off the pcb and which points it's connected to).
Sadly they don't seem to be working still, a friend tried testing with a multi-meter and it seemed to get an input going from the solder I'd added to the board to the grounding pin on the back of the button, but no other times.

My PCB feat. messy as hell wires.
KiIHRAR.jpg

Right Trigger: it's not soldered over the IC here, it just hangs over, cause these are a bitch to solder.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I have no idea why it isn't working and really just want to play my KI and BB happily :(

ps2/ps3/pc mayflash universal fightstick

Hi,
I bought one of these recently so i could play all my old ps2 games on an actual ps2 console . It was very cheap like under £30.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0015PHMFU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1488630624&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=universal+arcade+stick&dpPl=1&dpID=41-3eP-2doL&ref=plSrch

I watched some vids on youtube about people modding them. Because im not too bothered about all sanwa parts for this (im reserving those sanwa parts for my ps4 venom stick). Could i still stick an octagonal gate in the mayflash universal fightstick, so basically just replacing the square with an octo?

Any other info?

Thanks
Anth

So i'm looking for a new stick to buy to eventually convert to a hitbox and I really like the look of the Obsidian and the Dragon. I noticed that below their plexi is this metal plate that seems fairly easy to remove. To anyone who owns these sticks, are the metal plates easy to remove, and will doing so hurt the stability of the stick?

It’s been a while since SLS Sega Saturn USB Control Pads were available …

Dear shoryuken community,

I’ve been reading a lot of thread here for the last two days and had an eye on like ebay for at least three weeks now.

As the genuine SLS Sega Saturn USB Pads are almost impossible to purchase, and if then what I’ve seen not below $150, I wondered if some of you had lately—not back in 2014 or when—experiences with PCB-swapping, for example putting the Play Sega PCB into an genuine Sega Saturn Control Pad (non-USB) or e.g. this Retrolink clone (I think these two are the most appropriate clones, from what I read here).

Also I read about soldering some USB wire directly to the non-USB Control Pads, but that looked to me very very complex if you’re not into electronics.

So, could you please give me some advice? I doubt there will be some awesome e.g. 8bitdo Sega Saturn Control Pads, so I wonder if I should buy some of those Play Sega or Retrolink ones, if I should just stay with them or if I should swap there PCB into some non-USB original Control Pad … (I also remember there were some inconsistencies with e.g. the should pads? That’s a pity …)

Thank you very very much for your advice!
